St. Olaf College Regents Hall
Haldeman-Homme Provides LEED Platinum Lab Using Creative Solutions
At St. Olaf College sustainability is a way
of life. In an effort to do their part, they strove to create a
new science center that would meet the needs of their students,
staff, and faculty in an eco-friendly manner. What resulted
was the brand new Regents Hall of Natural and Mathematical
Sciences. With the help of Haldeman-Homme, Inc. this
building became one of the first science facilities in the
country to obtain the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED
Platinum certification.
“The best part about working with Haldeman-Homme was the people that came with the product.”
-Dave Van Wylen, Associate Dean
Previously St. Olaf had been operating in a severely outdated science facility. In an effort to keep up with their emphasis on undergraduate research and meet the needs of their students, construction began on the brand new Regents Hall in December of 2007. Students and faculty alike were very involved in the design process; after all they were the ones who would be using the new space. Dave Van Wylen, Associate Dean for Natural Sciences and Mathematics, said the mission for St. Olaf and their new science center was, “to be faculty research active with undergrads at the bench.” Knowing their needs for a quality, green, and user friendly facility, St. Olaf officials chose to partner with Haldeman-Homme, Inc. for all their laboratory and storage needs. “After an analysis of all potential vendors, Haldeman-Homme came out the strongest in regards to environmentally friendly products and practices.”
In August 2008 the 200,000 square foot Regents Hall was completed. The brand new $63 million facility contains 28 teaching labs, 9 conference rooms, 15 flat-floored and tiered classrooms, 7 computational labs, numerous informal gathering spaces, and an 8,000 square foot science library. Haldeman-Homme provided Thermo Scientific Casework, Accent Cabinets, Concept Fume Hoods, and MAX Adaptable Systems throughout the facility’s laboratories. Spacesaver Mobile Storage was installed to reduce building costs by reducing the area needed for storage. Spacesaver Static Shelving was installed throughout the science library.
Throughout the design and construction process Haldeman-Homme worked closely with St. Olaf officials, General Contractor Oscar J. Boldt Construction Company, Holabird & Root Architects, and The Weidt Group sustainable design consulting services to keep the project on time and within budget. Dave Van Wylen said of Haldeman-Homme, the best part was, “the people that came with the product.”
