St. Michael-Albertville High School in St. Michael, Minnesota

In and effort to meet the demands of their rapidly growing school district, St. Michael-Albertville Public Schools decided in May of 2007 to make much needed changes. They converted their current high school into a middle school and constructed a brand new, state-of-the-art high school.

The district wanted to work with reliable, local companies who could provide high quality, durable materials which could withstand the everyday demands of a growing education environment. The general contractor chosen for the project was Donlar Construction out of St. Cloud, Minnesota. They worked side by side with ARY architects to design and build the 410,000 square feet structure. When it came to high quality, durable storage solutions, auditorium outfitting and athletic facilities, the district turned to a local supply company, Haldeman-Homme, Inc. The Minneapolis company was chosen after being highly recommended by other area schools and for their accessibility in the case that any follow up would be necessary. “A huge benefit of using a local company was that we were able to go down to the show rooms (at Haldeman-Homme and Anderson-Ladd) and take a look at a variety of available products in order to make sure we were making the most economical, long term choice of materials.”

Haldeman-Homme and sister company Anderson-Ladd provided seating for the new auditorium, a unique fieldhouse floor and essential space saving and storage components for the new school.

The auditorium, which was outfitted with approximately 1,450 Irwin marquee auditorium seats, now accommodates the entire student body.

Haldeman-Homme also installed Debourgh student and athletic lockers, Spacesaver library shelving, a Spacesaver mobile storage system and a Porter wrestling mat storage system. All of these products were included to maximize storage space while minimizing the amount of necessary floor space.

Anderson Ladd installed a unique fieldhouse flooring surface with inlayed basketball, volleyball, and badminton courts. Surrounding the courts is a 200 meter, certified track. The gym floor is a Robbins Pulastic, spike-proof surface. “The Pulastic surface was chosen for its versatility and has already been used for football, volleyball and basketball and everyone loves it. As a matter of fact, the Physical education classes have been using the fieldhouse rather than the competition gym because the [Pulastic] flooring surface seems indestructible” said Lead Custodian TJ Zerwas. Haldeman-Homme also installed a suspended running track with a Robbins Durathon 3/8” rubber track surface. The raised track is primarily used for walking and jogging while the lower track is certified for competition use.

Throughout the project, Haldeman-Homme worked closely with Donlar and ARY to complete the project on-time and within budget. According to Zerwas, “Everything looks great, was done on time and was all ready to go for the first day of school!”
